Avon, Vital Voices Global Partnership and AEquitas Launch the Justice Institute on Gender-Based Violence in Mexico

Initiative Provides Multi-Disciplinary Training and Technical Assistance to Public Service Officials and NGO Representatives to Protect Victims and Improve Criminal Justice Response

Sep 9, 2014

GUADALAJARA, MEXICO, September 9, 2014 – Today, Vital Voices Global Partnership and AEquitas: The Prosecutor’s Resource on Violence Against Women will implement the Justice Institute on Gender-Based Violence funded by the Avon Foundation for Women. Over three days, the Institute will provide innovative, interactive and multi-disciplinary training courses and technical assistance to more than 50 judges, prosecutors, members of law enforcement, government officials and NGO advocates from across Mexico.

The Justice Institute improves victim protection efforts and the criminal justice response to domestic abuse by facilitating a holistic approach to addressing violence against women and ensuring collaboration between allied professionals across several disciplines.

“We are thrilled to bring the Justice Institute to Mexico,” says Cindy Dyer, vice president for Human Rights at Vital Voices and a former specialized domestic violence and sexual violence prosecutor. Ms. Dyer also served as Director of the United States Department of Justice, Office on Violence Against Women. “The Institute model has had broad success internationally in increasing victim access to services and justice by encouraging the adoption of a victim-centered approach and shifting perceptions surrounding gender-based violence.”

The Justice Institute represents one component of an initiative launched in March of this year by the Global Partnership to End Violence Against Women, a collaboration between Vital Voices, the Avon Foundation for Women, and the U.S. State Department. That initiative also includes special funding for victims of extreme forms of gender based violence through the Gender-Based Violence Emergency Response and Protection Initiative. Together, these two initiatives work to combat violence against women around the world.

“At Avon we are excited to be part of initiatives like this where we empower women and also go further by providing a better understanding of the law so those that women are better protected. One of Avon’s priorities is also to raise awareness that domestic violence is a problem that affects both a woman’s personal and professional life. Empowerment is in itself an indisputable instrument in shaping an appropriate level of self-esteem. Therefore, through the Alza La Voz program, we seek to provide women elements that allow them to build themselves as successful women, capable of generating changes in themselves and in those around them: family, friends, coworkers, etc., that is "Change me and help others." "Cecilia Riviello, Vice President of Sales Avon Mexico and Central America concluded.
