Two New York City Schools Awarded Initial Gifts

NEW YORK, Nov. 16 /PRNewswire/ -- Avon Products, Inc. (NYSE: AVP) today announced that it has raised $7 million to aid children affected by the events of September 11, with fundraising efforts still underway. This initial $7 million was raised in just ten days through sales of the specially designed Avon Heart of America Pin, which is sold by Avon independent Sales Representatives in the U.S. and is priced at $4.00. The pin is also available on the company's web site at http://www.avon.com, and will continue to be sold through March 2002. All net proceeds from sales of the pin will be directed to financial aid for educational institutions, after-school programs and children's programs that provide counseling, education, childcare and related services to those affected by the terrorist attacks. To maximize impact, Avon will distribute 100% of these proceeds within six months of fundraising.

Among the first recipients awarded funds are two New York City schools: Stuyvesant High School and P.S. 234. Stuyvesant High School is the premier science and technology public high school in New York City, located just five blocks from the World Trade Center. In the weeks following the tragedy the school served as headquarters for the emergency relief effort. The Avon funds will be awarded to the Stuyvesant High School Parents' Association Recovery Fund. P.S. 234 is one of the seven displaced public schools located in the World Trade Center neighborhood, with students and faculty now placed in a vacant Catholic School. Funds will be disbursed to the P.S. 234 P.T.A.

"As we approach the season of Thanksgiving, we at Avon hope that our efforts will make a difference in the lives of families affected by this national tragedy," said Brian Connolly, President, Avon U.S. "We are extremely proud of the contribution made by our 550,000 Sales Representatives in raising these funds. Their spirit of compassion and caring is shining through as never before."

On Monday, November 19, Avon will proclaim its heartfelt thanks to the Avon Sales Representatives and their customers in full-page, color advertisements in USA TODAY and The New York Times.

Support from the new fund, in addition to earlier relief donations, increases Avon's overall contributions to more than $9 million. On September 13, Avon donated $1 million in corporate funds to the American Red Cross in Greater New York to support the extensive disaster relief efforts. At that same time,

Avon initiated matching U.S.-based employee contributions on a dollar-to-dollar basis through the Matching Gifts Program of the Avon Products Foundation, the company's fully accredited public charity. Avon employs approximately 9,800 associates in the U.S. In addition, the company is working with its partner, Gifts In Kind International, to identify and provide critically needed products and services in conjunction with its United Way affiliate partners in New York and Washington, D.C.
