15,000 Avon Representatives Expected to Attend Third Annual National Convention
Program Focuses on Entrepreneurial Career Opportunities
Jul 24, 2000
Avon Products, Inc. (NYSE: AVP) today said some 15,000 independent Avon sales representatives in the U.S. -- a 50% increase over last year's attendance - are expected to attend the company's third annual National Avon Representative Convention. The three-day convention will take place in Las Vegas from July 28-30.
The convention is designed to help Avon representatives strengthen their skills in product knowledge, direct selling, beauty consulting, new customer prospecting, recruiting, financial management, business planning and personal image. Representatives who have attended previous conventions significantly outperform representatives who did not attend. Avon's research has shown that Representatives who have attended the 1998 and 1999 conventions increased their annual sales an average of 53%.
"Today's Avon representatives are looking for opportunities to attract new customers and increase their earnings potential," said Susan J. Kropf, chief operating officer, North America and Global Business Operations. "This year's convention will give Avon sales representatives the tools they need to revolutionize the way they do business."
According to the Direct Selling Association (DSA), a U.S. industry trade group based in Washington, D.C., retail direct sales in the U.S. have more than doubled over the past ten years, from $10 billion to $23 billion, and the number of salespeople has grown from four million to nearly 10 million during the same period. In addition, the most recent DSA figures reveal that 72% of sales from direct selling are generated through individual one-on-one selling. Direct selling accounts for 98% of Avon's annual revenues.
The 2000 National Avon Representative Convention will feature seminars on a variety of innovative programs designed to enhance the career-building opportunities available to Avon representatives, including:
Avon Leadership Opportunity, Avon's multi-level marketing model for sales representatives who want a more entrepreneurial business opportunity. In addition to servicing their own customers, Leadership representatives recruit and train others to become successful sales representatives while earning commissions on sales generated by their recruits. Convention attendees will hear from Avon Leadership representatives who have built successful multi- million dollar businesses.
The Avon Beauty Advisor Opportunity, which launches at this year's Convention. It involves a three-phase training and development program designed to enhance beauty competencies of product knowledge, consultative selling skills, customer service and marketing. Avon Representatives will hear from certified Avon Beauty Advisors featured at the convention about how this comprehensive training will improve their beauty skills and expertise.
The e-Representative, Avon's representative-centric approach to on-line shopping that puts the Avon representative at the heart of the Internet and uses technology to enhance Avon's one-on-one relationships with women. Through personalized web pages provided by Avon, e-Representatives will be able to conduct all business functions online, including processing orders, managing inventory, and servicing customers 24 hours a day, seven days a week, wherever they live.
Avon representatives will also learn about other business-building initiatives such as opportunities to license and operate Avon Beauty Centers located in retail shopping malls.
In addition to participating in the business agenda, representatives will also preview the leading products for the fourth quarter holiday selling season, which generates 30% of Avon's annual sales; hear a keynote address by actress Suzanne Somers, and enjoy celebrity appearances by entertainer Engelbert Humperdink and fitness guru Richard Simmons.
Opening and closing ceremonies will be held at the Thomas and Mack Center on July 28 and July 30, respectively. All other convention events will be held at the Sands Expo Center, July 29 and 30.
